Our Mission

We carry forward a century-old promise to heal our homeland.

The Hakim Workeneh Eshete and Melaku Bayen Society is a fellowship of experienced Ethiopian physicians, each with more than thirty years of medical service. We are bound together by the conviction that Ethiopia’s healthcare future is built by those who choose to stay, to teach, and to serve.

We partner with universities to train the medical professionals who will carry Ethiopia forward. We mentor young doctors so that talent becomes roots, not one-way tickets. And we hold close the example of two men who, a century ago, left comfort behind to bring medicine home.

“The talent that leaves Ethiopia is not lost — it is waiting to be asked to come home.”

“I was to study medicine and return to Ethiopia as a physician for the purpose of helping to organise the public health system.”

— Dr. Melaku Bayen, 1921

The Founders

The pioneers whose footsteps we follow

Our society is named for two Ethiopians who, a century apart, crossed oceans to learn medicine — and then crossed back to bring it home. Their lives are our compass.

Hakim Workeneh Eshete

also known as Dr. Charles Martin

Ethiopia's First Western-Trained Physician

Born in Gondar during the reign of Emperor Tewodros II, the young Workeneh was taken to India after the Battle of Magdala, where he received a western education and qualified as a medical doctor — the first Ethiopian to do so. He returned home not for comfort, but to serve, becoming a physician, statesman, diplomat, and a major progressive force in modern Ethiopian history.

  • First Ethiopian to qualify as a western-trained medical doctor
  • Led a diplomatic mission to the United States in 1927
  • Ethiopia's Minister to the United Kingdom during the Fascist Crisis from 1934 to 1936
  • Championed medicine, education, diplomacy, and economic development

Born in Wollo and raised in the palace of the future Emperor Haile Selassie, Melaku Bayen was chosen in 1921 to study medicine abroad — charged personally by His Majesty to return and help organise Ethiopia\u2019s public health system. He graduated from Howard University, served wounded soldiers at the Battle of Maychew, and became a tireless voice for Ethiopia on the world stage.

  • First Ethiopian medical doctor to complete his education in the United States
  • Graduated from Howard University, 1935
  • Founded "The Voice of Ethiopia" to rally global support
  • Led relief efforts for Ethiopian refugees across four nations
